Apologia doctissimi viri Rogeri Aschami, Angli, pro caena dominica, contra missam & eius prestigias: in academia olim cantabrigiensi exertationis gratia inchoata
Londini: Pro Francisco Coldocko, 1577. First edition. [viii], 296 pp. 12mo. Eighteenth-century calf; joints repaired, the first leaf is blank but for the signature mark and this copy, as in most, has the imprint date hand-corrected to 1578, worming in lower margin not affecting text. First edition. [viii], 296 pp. 12mo. A rare anticlerical tract by Ascham, whose role in the Protestant Reformation has recently received more scholarly attention. In his role as royal tutor, he would have been forced to take some position, and his cautious manner to religious reform is expressed here as he "attempted to sway by rhetoric rather than reasoned theological argument" (ODNB). Unpublished during his lifetime, it appeared ten years after his death. Very scarce on the market, the only previous copy to appear at auction was at Sotheby's 1931. STC 825; ESTC S100257. Provenance: George Stokes (bookplate); Cardiff Castle (bookplate); Robert S. Pirie (bookplate)
