The New Metropolis: 1600-1900 (Memorable Events of Three Centuries) -- From the Island of Mana-hat-ta to Greater New York at the Close of the Nineteenth Century
New York: D. Appleton and Co, 1899. 3/4 leather. Very Good. ThE 1899 "Autograph Memorial Edition De Luxe", copy # 152 ("printed for Mrs. Russell Sage") of 250 copies issued. THIS COPY SIGNED AT THE LIMITATION BY ANDEW H. GREEN (1820-1903), ONE OF (IF NOT THE) KEY FIGURES IN THE GROWTH OF 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK. GREEN WAS PIVOTAL IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CENTRAL PARK AND, INCREDIBLY, FOUNDED THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, THE NEW YORK PUBIC LIBRARY AND THE BRONX ZOO. IN FACT, RENOWNED COLUMBIA PROFESSOR (AND EDITOR OF "THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEW YORK CITY") KENNETH JACKSON CALLS ANDREW H. GREEN "ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT LEADER IN GOTHAM'S LONG HISTORY". A solid copy to boot, bound in the publisher's 3/4 light-brown, pebbled leather. Solid, tight and VG to VG+, with bright gilt-lettering and insignia at the panels. Very light wear along the outer hinges, light wear to the panel edges, light soiling at the preliminaries. Thick, oblong folio, one thousand engravings (a number of them in full-color and with their original printed tissue-guards). With Andrew Green's signature adorning this copy, this is a very important, even historic example.
