The Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery: Containing coloured figures and descriptions of the most beautiful and curious flowering plants and shrubs cultivated in Great Britain. Selected from the works of John Lindley R. Sweet and D. Don to which are added English descriptions, and the most recent practical hints on culture, propagation, etc. by a practical floriculturist (Volumes 1 and 2 ONLY of 4)
London: G. Willis, 1854. Hardbound. A lovely set internally. Ex library copies with library binding, perforation stamp on each title page, bar codes in back, and end paper/spine stamps. Plates generally quite nice, some extremely fresh and crisp and with beautiful hand coloring; some colored entirely, others only partially. Volume 1: One plate (detached but laid in) is a folding plate and is completely torn along the fold but could be repaired; foxing to some pages, but plates free of marks and soiling. Occasional light chip to a plate edge, not at all affecting the image. Volume 2: A cleaner, tighter copy than Vol. 1 but with a stamp on the image of two of the plates.. Green library buckram. Each volume contains numerous hand-colored plates, with tissue guards; each plate accompanied by a 2-page annotation. The plate and text both are numbered the same, as a "group." Volume 1 contains 50 of the published 72 color plates (numbered 1 - 72) and ALL of the text, including the annotations for the missing plates. Volume 2 contains 47 of 72 plates (numbered 73 - 144), again with annotations for both present and missing plates. Sold as a collection of 97 hand-colored botanical plates, about 5 with significant faults. These plates would enhance any decor and be even more stunning when properly framed. Kept together as a set on ornamental gardening, this is a valuable reference. Included is a volume-specific index at the front of each book. Scarce copies. Contact us for a list of specific plates present, which will be presented to you as a jpeg of the pages, with pencil notations.
