Trading Eights: The Faces of Jazz
Petaluma, CA/Santa Rosa, CA: Mixolydian Editions/Nawakum Press, 2016. Todd, Jr., James G.. (64)pp. One of 55 copies, of which forty were for sale, signed by the author, poet, and artist. Illustrated by James G. Todd, Jr. with wood engravings of iconic jazzmen he produced between 1973 and 1994. The illustrations are interleaved with translucent sheets of paper printed with the musician's name in red and blue and swirling smoke in charcoal gray, evoking the hazy atmosphere of the nightclubs at which these titans of jazz played. The engravings are preceded by an essay by Ted Gioia, author of The History of Jazz, and a poem entitled "Meet me at the Lighthouse" by his brother Dana Gioia, current Poet Laureate of California and former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Jointly published by Richard Wagener of Mixolydian Editions and David Pascoe of Nawakum Press, Trading Eights was bound by Lisa Van Pelt in quarter sienna goatskin with blue-black and gray paste paper over boards, and copper stamping to front cover.
