L'Africa ...
V.M.Coronelli - Venice - - Each 44.5 x 60 - Uncoloured - A spectacular double sheet map of the entire continent. These two sheets appeared in Vincenzo Coronelli's major atlas publications the "Isolario" and "Atlante Veneto". The map is inundated with detail, although much is based on hearsay, and has numerous vignettes of animals and native hunting scenes. A large vignette, in the continent's centre, features the figure of the God of the Nile as the source of the river and has a large description concerning the river. Coronelli, one of the greatest mapmakers of the period, was renowned as a geographer, cartographer and globe maker who worked closely with the Parisian mapmakers, receiving much up-dated information of new discoveries through the French Jesuit connection. - Norwich, Maps Of Africa, 56.
