Nova Orbis Tabvla In Lvcem Edita A F De Wit
F.De Wit - Amsterdam - - 56 x 48 - Original colour - With a wealth of decoration, this is a thoroughly engaging world map. The double-hemisphere is surrounded by four scenes combining allegorical representations of the seasons and the continents, along with the signs of the zodiac. The gentleman in the lower left corner would not be out of place at closing time in Leicester Square today, such is his Bacchanalian over-indulgence. California is shown as an island and partial outlines are given for Australia and New Zealand. This is the second state of the first plate used to produce this map - it has an added border and cherubs in the cusps (that did not appear on the first state of the first plate), but is before the appearance of "Nova Guinea" and "Quiri Regio" in the left hand hemisphere, which appeared on the second plate. With areas of expert restoration, nevertheless an attractive map from the so-called "golden age" of Dutch cartography. - Shirley, The Mapping Of The World, 451.
