London: R. Carlile, 1819, [but 1820]. Two volumes. 8vo. Recent drab boards to style with paper spine labels, all edges gilt, modern bookplates to the front pastedowns. Frontispiece portrait. Some marking to the lower corner of the preliminary leaves of volume II, a very good set. An early collected edition of Paine's works, published by the radical writer and publisher Richard Carlile, and prefaced with a life of the author. Carlile's "publisher's preface" is signed off "Dorchester Gaol, Nov. 12, 1820", where he had been imprisoned the previous year after having been convicted of blasphemy and seditious libel. Volume I comprises: "Common Sense", "American Crisis", "Public Good", "Letter to Abbe Raynal", copies of letters between Paine and George Washington, "Dissertations on Government...", "Prospects on the Rubicon" and "Rights of Man, Part I"; volume II includes: "Rights of Man, Part II", "Letter Addressed to the Addressers", "Dissertation on the First Principles of Government", "Agrarian Justice Opposed to Agrarian Law", "Decline and Fall of the English System of Finance", "Letter to George Washington" and "Letters to the Citizens of the United States" followed by a host of miscellaneous letters and essays. The works are individually paginated and mostly have their own title pages.
