Illustrated with 12 full-page, full-color, chromolithographed plates by Maud Humphrey, and decorative borders and designs by Elizabeth S. Tucker. Maud Humphrey (1868-1940) was an American suffragette, commercial illustrator, watercolorist, and the mother of actor Humphrey Bogart. She studied at the Art Students League of New York and in Paris at the Julian Academy. She won the competition of famous Boston chromolithographer Louis Prang and Company for Christmas card design, and then began working for publisher F. A. Stokes as an illustrator. From the 1890?s through the 1920?s, her work Included child portraits, calendars, greeting cards, postcards, fashion magazines, and more than 20 story books. She earned more than $50, 000 a year while her husband's surgical practice brought in only $20, 000 a year and the average book illustrator earned about $4, 000 per year. Covers mildly bumped and worn, former owner's name in pencil on ffep, otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean. All illustrations in perfect condition, clean and bright. Now in Mylar. VERY GOOD.
