Bradbury & Evans. London. 1846. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. (6.7 x 4.3 inches). Vignette title page in 4th variant with the words "A Love story" on a scroll carried by Cupid and without the Publishers imprint at the bottom of the page. Illustrated throughout by John Leech, Richard Doyle, Clarkson Stanfield and Daniel Maclise. In a beautiful late nineteenth/early twentieth century leather binding of full dark green morocco with elaborate Art Nouveau decorations. Boards with black, blue, light green and red onlays within gilt decorations. Spine with black label and red and green leather onlays designs within gilt tooling. Board edges decorated with gilt rope design. Turn ins with decorative gilt borders. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Dark green silk bookmark. The binding is not signed but is the work of a master bookbinder and is a stunning example of the decorative Bookbinder at their best. There is some light foxing to the first few pages but overall this is a fine copy. Housed in a green cloth covered, silk lined, clam shell box with a purple silk tie pull. The protective case is rubbed and bumped to the edges but has done its job of keeping the book in fine condition.
