Wooden Gavel from the USS “Hartford"
Mobile Bay, Alabama, 1864. 11.5" L. "Wooden gavel, 9.5"" handle and 3.5"" head. Vintage 4.25” x 1.5"" cloth tag attached, penned “From the U.S.S. Hartford. / Farragut's flagship Mobile Bay.” The USS “Hartford"" was the flagship of Flag Officer David G. Farragut, the commander of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. The “Hartford” served in several prominent campaigns in the Civil War, most notably the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. It was during this battle that Rear Admiral Farragut ordered, ""Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!"" and led his ship into Mobile Bay to victory with the rest of fleet following.Ex-Paul DeHaan Collection of Items Related to Admiral D.G. Farragut and the USS Hartford."
