[Photographic Portfolio]: Charles Cooper, Portraitist
New York. [circa 1920s]. Charles Cooper's original leather portfolio (15" x 21") with his name and studio address (576 Fifth Avenue, at 47th Street) stamped in gold on the front, containing 30 large format individual and group portrait photographs. Most are gelatin silver prints measuring between 10" x 13" and 11" x 14", including a few mounted circular prints measuring about 11" across. Ten are mounted on Cooper's thick studio mats, Signed in pencil or with his name embossed on the mat. The other 20 loose prints are unidentified. All appear to have been taken sometime in the mid-1920s.Several accomplished individual and family portraits by this little-known New York City photographer, whose images appear strongly influenced by Julia Margaret Cameron, including one image of two girls. Other compelling images include three prints of various members of the same large family taken outside in a park, all strikingly similar in style to August Sander's portraits from the same period. Only two of the prints are identified with a small typed paper slip laid down on the mat: a portrait of Clyde Fisher, the father of astronomy in America and curator of the Hayden Planetarium; and a portrait of New York lawyer Crescens Hubbard and his family. The studio mounts and blank versos are soiled, else all 30 prints are near fine overall, the images are clean and bright, in a good portfolio rubbed and scuffed at the edges. A detailed list is available:Three portraits of a large family (not mounted)1. Landscape Family Portrait (14" x 11"): Matriarch, two boys, seven young girls, and two toddlers.
