White paper covers with folding top and side flaps. Front cover printed in red and black. Spine vertically lettered Fragments...Joyce...1929. Author's signature to half-title. Portrait of author with tissue guard. Tight clean and square. Tight binding: tight joints and hinges. Straight spine. Sharp corners. Cream Japanese vellum remarkably clean and unmarred with no bookplate, writing, marks, tears or folds; no loose pages. Appears unread. Clean page block sides. Clean endpapers. Back cover with publisher's emblem in center. VERY GOOD glassine wrapper protects covers. GOOD+ cardboard slipcase, covered with green suede paper, edged with silver paper tape. 1929 stated. 8vo (8 1/4 in. x 6 1/2 in.); [14] xvi 64 pp. Black Sun Press secured the aim of all private presses, to publish an except from Work in Progress, i.e. the draft of Finnegans Wake, Joyce's seventeen-year final masterpiece. Etched author portrait by Brancusi, an important artist who did little graphic work, conveys the author's enigmatic involution. (James Joyce by Ellmann p. 614) A portrait as abstract as the author's text. (The Artist & The Book 32). Preface by linguist C.K. Ogden. Three short fables: The Mookse and the Gripes (Finnegans Wake 152-9); The Muddest Thick That Was Ever Heard Dump (Finnegans Wake 282-304); and The Ondt and the Gracehoper (Finnegans Wake 414-19). Colophon: This first edition . . . is limited to 100 copies on Japanese Vellum signed by the author, 500 copies on Holland Van Gelder Zonen and 50 copies Hors Commerce. (Slocum & Cahoon A36) Near fine book: spine ends with light wear; front and rear blank with subtle erasure. Very good wrapper: small edge tears. Good+ sturdy slipcase: narrow 1 in. lacking; edge tears; small area residue. Near perfect signed first edition limited 1/100 on Japanese vellum by James Joyce in well-preserved original wrapper and slipcase.
