All three volumes rebound in later, circa early 20th century, three-quarters leather with marbled paper over boards. Title stamped in gilt to black morocco labels and volume numbers stamped in gilt to green morocco labels to spines. Five raised bands to spines. Mild edgewear to bindings and moderate scattered rubbing and scuffing to marbled paper. Green and yellow head and tailbands. Small stain to head of spine of Volume II. Previous owner's name stamped to bottom edges of text blocks. Mild dust soiling to edges of text blocks. Bindings are tight and sound. Generally mild scattered foxing to pages throughout with occasional heavy foxing, particularly at preliminary pages. Frontispiece portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds of Samuel Johnson to Volume I, from the original picture in the possession of James Boswell, Esq. Additional Corrections page present to Volume I. Fold-out plate to Volume II: "Round Robin, addressed to Samuel Johnson, L.L.D. with Facsimiles of the Signatures." Fold-out plate to Volume III: "Fac Similies of Dr. Johnson's hand writing" at ages 16, 35, and 75, the last year of his life. A handsomely bound set of this second edition, the last published in the author's lifetime, of Boswell's acclaimed Life of Samuel Johnson, often called the greatest biography in the history of the English language--though unconventional in content--and undoubtedly a landmark work in the development of the genre.
