THE COMPLETE POETICAL WORKS OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER Now first put into modern English by John S P Tatlock and Percy MacKaye
Macmillan & co. New York. 1912. FIRST EDITION. 4to. (9.9 x 7.4 inches). Illustrated with 32 full colour plates, each with a printed tissue paper guard. Publishers presentation copy with their circular blind stamp stating 'Presentation Copy' on the bottom of the title page. Bound by Bayntun - Riviere, for Henry Sotheran of London, in a fine early leather binding of half brown morocco. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards. Marble endpapers. Top edge gilt. Some minor fading to the spine but overall a near fine and attractive copy of this uncommon book. ----- The work is the first time Chaucer's works were issued in Modern English and also contains a short life of Chaucer and a glossary and notes on the writings. Published by Macmillan in New York it appears that there was no UK edition with a search of the major British holding libraries showing no copies held except the two copies in the British Library which are both this New York edition.
