Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette.
Washington: Gales and Seaton,, 1835. Delivered at the request of both houses of the Congress of the United States, before them, in the House of Representatives at Washington, on the 31st December, 1834. Octavo (215 x 128 mm). Original presentation binding of red morocco grain skiver , decorative gilt flat spine, single-line gilt border on sides, yellow edges, pale green endpapers. Spine split and a little worn, joints split but holding, a few scrapes to covers, a few leaves toned, without the tipped-in leaf bearing Adams's presentation inscription (found in a number of copies). An attractive, unsophisticated copy. First edition, printed on thick paper and in a style of binding that was favoured by the Adams dynasty for decades. An important speech by a great American honouring the memory of a great Frenchman, the Marquis de Lafayette, hero of the Revolutionary War, who had died in May 1834. Adams and Lafayette had been personally close.
