Lives of The Queens of England.
London: Longman, Brown, Green, & Roberts,, 1857. From the Norman Conquest. Now first published from official records & other authentic documents, private as well as public. A New Edition, revised and greatly augmented. Embellished with portraits of every Queen. 8 volumes, octavo (192 x 120 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, spines richly gilt with titles direct, raised bands, marbled sides, edges and endpapers. Steel-engraved frontispieces, title vignettes and portraits of the Queens throughout. Bindings a little rubbed, light foxing to plates. An excellent set. A handsomely bound set of Strickland's Lives of the Queens of England, which was first published in 1840?-8. The biographies were "among the most popular of all Victorian historical publications, and remain important landmarks in the development of the biographical genre... They were undoubtedly key figures in the development of writing on women's history, playing a role in creating a tradition of female worthies which can be seen as the first step towards fuller scholarly investigation" (ODNB).
