History of the 91st Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders, Now the 1st Battalion Princess Louise's Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders 1794 -1894.
Edinburgh & London: W & A.K. Johnston. 1894 - Description: Edinburgh & London: W & A.K. Johnston. Limited Edition of 530 Copies Only, First edition, 1894. 43 pp., coloured lithograph frontispiece and 7 other coloured, lithographs of uniforms and a further plate of the regimental tartan, all are still tissue guarded. Original red cloth; gilt armorial to front; 25 x 16cm. Bruised and folded to top and base of spine; a few of marks to rear cover; showing stitching between pages 22 and 23. Raised in 1794, the 91st Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders, later the 1st Battalion Princess Louise's Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, distinguished themselves during the Napoleonic Wars and inclusively the Peninsular Campaigns at Rolica, Vimiera, Corunna, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, and Toulouse. Later the Highlanders went on to serve with distinction in South Africa from 1846-47, 1851-52-53, and finally in 1879 against the Zulus. This book gives account of all these events but it is for its lavish plates of uniforms by Henry Payne that the work is generally collected. Eight coloured lithographs of uniforms plus one further of the regimental tartan, make this a stunning history and accompanies five appendices which record colonels and officers. SCARCE.
