Songs of Good Fighting
- London: Elkin Matthews, 1908 [1898]. Sm 8vo, 61 p., with two pages ads bound in at rear. Original light blue cloth with front panel ruled in white. Second edition of this collection of songs of the sea, after the first Boston edition of 1898. Featured here are 'Dedicare', 'A Buccaneer Chorus', 'Envoy', and 'A Song of the Freeboaters,' among others. This edition also features a preface by Harry Persons Taber and the work 'Festin d'Adieu' which were not present in the 1898 edition. Taber (1865-1951) was a writer who served for a time as an author for the Denver Republican, before he met Elbert Hubbard in 1895, with whom he founded the Roycroft Shop and the periodical The Philistine, in which he is credited as editor of the July-Dec 1896 issues. Taber sold his share in the Roycroft Shop and the Philistine to Hubbard in November 1895, and after his association with Hubbard ended, he repeatedly claimed that he was the exclusive founder of both the Roycroft Shop and the Philistine, and that Hubbard was a mere 'interloper' (Wertheim, The Stephen Crane Encyclopedia). Taber authored or co authored five novels before he died, including the current title, The Gordon Elopement, The Matrimonial Bureau, The Rubaiyat of the Commuter, and the semi autobiographical work Ezra and Me. Light flaking to white rule on front board, lower corners lightly bumped, chipping to spine tips, spotting to half title and to paste downs, some patchiness to boards, but a sound, VG copy. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM HARRY PERSONS TABER TO THEODORE ROOSEVELT: "To Theodore Roosevelt, good fighter: This little book which I have made in memory of my friend, Harry Persons Taber, Wilmington, Delaware, 16 October, 1908". Beneath this is written, "Ethel [Roosevelt], from father, 1908" in Ethel Roosevelt's hand. A handful of copies of this edition in OCLC, but scarce in the trade. A major association copy of a scarce book of seafaring poetry. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
