A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, Chartwell Edition
London: The Educational Book Company, Ltd., 1956. Illustrated Edition. Hardcover. This is a virtually pristine, collector-grade set of the first illustrated edition, bearing the original glassine wrappers. This first illustrated edition was published contemporaneously with the first edition and is known as "The Chartwell Edition." It is a lovely edition of Churchill?'s sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. This edition is not only illustrated, but is also attractively bound in blue leatherette with red leather spine labels blocked in gilt, gilt ruled spine compartments, gilt volume title and vertical rule on each front cover, head and foot bands, and blue topstain. Each volume is profusely illustrated. This set is quite scarce thus, beautifully preserved beneath the original plain glassine wrappers. The bindings are virtually perfect, immaculately clean and bright, square, and tight with sharp corners, perfect spine labels, and no wear. The contents are likewise, clearly unread - crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks and vivid, unfaded topstain. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The blue-stained top edges are clean and retain dark, wholly unfaded color. The fore and bottom page edges remain bright and clean. The only trivial blemish noted is a small indentation to the bottom edge of the Volume I text block. The original glassine wrappers show some wrinkling, tears, and a little loss, including some short,. horizontal tears to the spines, but are substantially complete and have done their job of protecting the magnificent set beneath. Please note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A267.2, Woods/ICS A138(d). Langworth p.317.
