London - Adam Islip, 1610 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. First edition.. The second edition of this major work in English of Ottoman history, enlarged from the first edition,and rather more sought after and valuable than the first as a result. Though lacking a couple of leaves, the author's text is complete, and has the portrait illustrations. Lacking the title page and dedication, and the two final leaves of the index, The Table. Referenced by ESTC #S112916. The Lives of the Othoman Kings and Emperors has separate title page dated 1609; pagination and register are continuous. There aremetal cut portrait illustrations. With largely marginal copperplate ink annotations. Richard Knolles, d. 1610, was an English historian and translator. Knolles is best known for The Generall Historie of the Turkes, first published in 1603. Compiled from a range of Byzantine and western histories, travellers' reports and letters, together with material from Leunclavius's recent Latin translation of a late fifteenth-century Ottoman chronicle, Knolles's was the first major work on the subject to appear in English, and was quickly recognized as a masterpiece of narrative synthesis -DNB. Condition: In a calf binding. Externally, worn, with significant loss and lifting. The joints are cracked. There are no endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the first and last few pages are working loose. Leaf 6C is detached. Some browning, with marks and some spots. There is loss to top corner of the second leaf, with loss to the text. There are marginal professional repairs. With browned tidemarks to the lower margins from page 838 to the rear, that do not affect the text. There are marginal small closed tears and chips to the first and last few pages, that do not affect the text. There are small closed tears or chips to some page margins. There is intermittentslight evidenceof past worming, mostly affecting the margins. Thereare intermittent marginal tidemarks. There is a closed tear, partially repaired,to page 827/828. There are very occasional small scorch holes. Overall: GOOD ONLY. An importantwork,with generally very good text, and deserving of due care and attention..
