Magnificent colour-plate book by the Belgian artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885) showing Javanese fruits and flowers, beautifully chromolithographed by P. de Pannemaeker. Shortly after having followed her husband to Java, Indonesia, Hoola van Nooten became a widow at 21, leaving her in debt and with a family to support. To make a living, she took to painting the flora of the island. Her extraordinary sketches show the exuberant colour display of tropical fruits and flowers, ideally suited to the new technique of chromolithography. "Van Nooten was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill" (Tomasi). Binding restored, new endpapers, some browning. A good copy of an impressive book.
