- Breugelmans, Leiden imprints p. 53; Typ. Batava 3948; Van Maanen, Cat. Royal Netherlands Ac. of arts and sciences, 251; not in Ars Mercatoria, Cat. Goldsmith, Einaudi, Kress. First edition of a rare, early work on coins from the Low Countries dating from the beginning of the 13th century (Diederik VII, Duke of Cleves) until circa 1420 (John III, Duke of Bavaria) by Erasmus van Houwelinghen (1524 - ca. 1600), a silversmith and engraver at 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. Van Houwelinghen was a firm supporter of William of Orange, and fled to Dordrecht when his native province came under the control of Philip II. He was a great collector of coins, and his own important collection formed the basis of this beautifully illustrated work. With armorial bookplate of William Wrixton Leycester. Corners of bindings slightly rubbed. Slightly soiled. Very good copy of an early numismatic work depicting coins from the mediaeval dukes and counts of the Low Countries. [Attributes: First Edition]
