London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1776. First Edition. 2 Volumes, folio (30 cm x 23.5 cm). Half-title to volume 2 only, as issued. Errata in volume 2 instructing the reader to make 2 pen corrections to the text, which has been done very neatly; pp. [2] blank, [xii], 510, [2] blank; [2 blank], [iv], 587, [1] publisher's advert, [2] blank; Leaves M3, U3, 2Z3, 3A4 and 3O4 of volume 1 are cancels; leaves D1, Zzz4 in volume 2 are cancels. Wide margins Vol. I has over 265 pages with very neat handwritten ink side-notes, and Vol. II has 63 similar pages of notes in what appears to be in a contemporary hand; top-edge only trimmed, others uncut, bound in contemporary speckled calf with gilt double frame, corners square. Masterfully rebacked in matching speckled leather, and with the original maroon and gilt-stamped leather title labels and gilt-stamped green volume number labels laid-down, Blemish to upper cover of vol. 1 (see pic.). Insignificant foxing to several pages only, one closed tear repaired in vol. 2 (see pic.), edges dusty, else a fine, handsome copy of the first edition in contemporary binding. "The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought". (Printing and the Mind of Man 221).. First Edition. Original.
