"Compiled by Awnsham and John Churchill, this is a very valuable collection, both for its range of coverage and for the fact that it gives the original accounts" (Hill). It includes the voyages of Nieuhoff, Baldaeus, and Thomas Phillips. Originally published in 1704 in four volumes, this edition includes an additional two volumes. By the third edition (1744-7), the work had grown to eight volumes. Awnsham Churchill was John Locke's publisher, and in the third edition the preliminary essay on the history of navigation is described as being 'supposed to be written by the celebrated Mr. Locke', and it was included in the 1812 edition of his works. However, "The authorship is doubtful, but Locke had much to do with getting together the materials of the collection, which is likely to have been produced at his instigation. Locke was upon friendly terms with Awnsham Churchill for many years, and left him a small legacy" (DNB).
