The Works of King Charles the Martyr: With a Collection of Declarations, Treaties, and other Papers concerning the Differences Betwixt His said Majesty and His Two Houses of Parliament. With the History of His Life; and also of His Tryal and Martyrdome.
London: Printed for Ric. Chiswell, at the Rose and Crown in St. Paul’s Church-Yard, MDCLXXXVII [1687]. Folio, 720 pp., two full-page engraved plates, engraved title and frontis.Contemporary paneled calf, gilt tooling, raised bands with gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, Binding a bit rubbed, calf flaking off and cracked especially along spine, some scratches on boards, tape repair on endpapers, internally bright; very good. Bookplate of Virginia Hobart. Second edition. Immediately after the English Civil War ended, King Charles I was executed. Just days after his execution a detailed justification of Charles’s role and policies in the war appeared in print under the title Eikon Basilike (1649). Parliament suppressed the text, it’s printing and sale, which is why the title page has little information about its authorship. Around the end of the 17th century John Gauden became the generally accepted compiler, and probably used some of the King’s actual writing. Wing C2076.
