Merope: A Tragedy
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans & Roberts, 1858. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Presentation copy, inscribed "From the author" with ownership signature of Thomas Arnold, the author's brother, dated Dublin 1858. Tired of Victorian England, Matthew's younger brother Tom Arnold (1823 - 1900) moved to New Zealand to become farmer and later to Tasmania to work as a school inspector. After having nine children and converting to Catholicism, he moved back to England where he became a literary scholar and then moved to Dublin where he taught James Joyce at University College. One of his children, Mary, became a best selling author who wrote under the pseudonym Mrs. Humphry Ward. Very good in original dark green cloth boards with gilt title to spine and blind stamped decoration to boards. Expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Minor rubbing and a few spots to boards with minor wear to corners. Occasional spots of foxing and light browning to margins of pages, but clean overall. Type-written description of this book is pasted down to rear free endpaper. 138 pages plus 32 pages of advertisements. DRA/052115.
