London, Joseph Masters; Exeter, William Roberts, 1869.. FIRST EDITION 1869, 8vo, approximately 195 x 130 mm, 7¾ x 5 inches, frontispiece table and 3 plates lithographed by W. Spreat of Exeter, 1 showing a bell in her usual position and 2 showing a ringer and the mechanism, pages: iv, 170, including index, errata and addenda, in the original publisher's pebble grain blind stamped dark green cloth, gilt lettering and tiny gilt ornament on spine, brown endpapers. Tiny bump to corners, front inner paper hinge just starting to crack, rear free replaced in matching paper, neat bookplate (1912) on front pastedown, correction in pencil to 1 footnote on the price of ropes, plates very faintly browned, contents very clean. A very good tight copy of the scarce first edition. Joseph Masters published a second and third edition in 1872 and 1876. All three of these editions are rare.
