, 1859. 1859. Very Good. [ANONYMOUS]. LITTLE ANNIE'S NEW, OR THIRD BOOK. By Her Mother, author of "Little Annie's First Book", "Little Annie's Second Book", etc., etc.. New York: A. D. F. Randolph, 1859. First edition. Illustrated with 5 wood engravings, a wood-engraved title-page, and 1 vignette. 177 pp. A complete copy but with some pages bound out of order due to one wrongly folded signature. 16mo., publisher's olive green cloth embossed in blind on sides, ANNIE'S NEW BOOK and decoration printed in gold to spine, pale yellow endpapers. Laid in is a small gift card presenting the book to "Master Percival Lowell with Grandpa's and Grandma's love & a Merry Christmas." "Lowell - Paris - 1865" is written in pencil on the ffep. (The Lowells, a family from Boston, Massachusetts, were in Paris for an extended stay at that time.) There are small, faint pencil marks in the text, mostly at the beginning of the volume, underlining groups of letters and indicating syllables within words that suggests the use of phonics in learning to read and aid in pronunciation. Young Percival Lowell (American, 1855-1916) learned his lessons well, becoming a successful businessman, astronomer, and mathematician, as well as the author of many books, including several based upon his travels in Japan and the Far East. Three of the engravings are signed, 2 by C. B. Gibbons and 1 by L. Gibbons. The letterpress title-page has the year 1860 on the recto and gives 1859 as the copyright on the verso, along with the printer, John A. Gray's Fire-Proof Printing Office. (The title information given at the start is taken from the illustrated title-page.) Binding shows light shelfwear, the gold type and decoration on spine has dulled, and the front hinge is split. It is a clean copy of a scarce title, with a nice association, and still in very good condition overall. LITTLE ANNIE'S NEW, OR THIRD BOOK is an entertaining little volume that combines instruction in English grammar with amusement in the form of a dialogue between a mother and her two daughters.
