Geschichte von Port Jackson in NeuHolland von 1788 bis 1792, Nebst einer Beschreibung der Insel Norfolk
?The earliest authentic account of the settlement a Port Jackson? (Streeter). 1794. Hamburg. Hoffmann. In 8vo (202 mm x 120 mm). 1 ff. + vi + 244 + folding map. Contemporary half German calf over boards, raised bands to spine tooled in gilt, lettering label perished, rubbed and scuffed. Title with a contemporary inscription, two later library stamps, foxing and browning; overall a good copy with wide margins and generally very clean. First edition in German. ?Regarded by the best authorities as the most accurate, orderly, vivacious and valuable description of life in the colony in its first years? (Hill). Tench (1758 ? 1833) sailed on may 1787 towards Botany Bay, making port there in 1788; shortly thereafter, he was transferred to Port Jackson where he deployed his exploring curiosity discovering the local flora and natural resources, as well as the locals of the region. Hill?s note, made for the first edition published a few years earlier, clearly states the importance of Tench?s work for the newly founded Port Jackson. The folding map ?Charte von Port Jackson? was not included in the first edition, and is one of the earliest available on Port Jackson. Cox II, 317. Ferguson, 198.
