Vincent Voiture was a French poet and writer, famous as a follower and diplomat to Gaston, Duke of Orleans, the third son of Henry IV of France. Vincent Voiture did not publish during his lifetime but his works were written and passed around the French court and French societyat the time. He won the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu and benefited from this association, becoming one of the earliest members of the Academie Francaise, established by Richelieu in 1635. Voiture's association with the French court and notable figures lend remarkable political insight to his letters, which are often better remembered than his poetry. Condition: Rebound in a red morocco binding with original gilt decorated boards. Externally, smart. Light bumping to extremities of boards and marks to both boards. Informative note slip adhered to front pastedown. Hinges reinforced. Internally, firmly and tightly bound. Difficult to open to gutter. Ten pages to the front of the first volume, including the frontispiece and engraved title page, have been heavily repaired and reinforced to preserve text, with evidence of past worming. Six pages to the rear of the final volume, including the index, have been amateurly repaired due to loss slightly affecting the text. Worming throughout, heavier to first and last pages of each volume, affecting the text with some minor loss. Informational ink inscription to the recto of the portrait frontispiece detailing the volume and Voiture himself. Pages bright and generally clean with marginal age toning. Occasional minor repairs to pages throughout, usually at gutter. Light tidemarks in places. Overall: GOOD.
