Labels somewhat worn; repairs to the spines and edges; very good copy.. 3 vols, original brown paper spines and blue paper boards, printed paper labels, untrimmed. Half-titles present. The first novel by the son-in-law and future biographer of Walter Scott, John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854), a story set in second century Rome about the adventures of a young man, Valerius, when he travels to the great capital city. Valerius is an early example of the classical-historical novel that became popular later in the 19th century with the writings of Bulwer-Lytton and others.
