Small 8vo, full blind-ruled calf antique, backstrip decorated in gilt between five raised bands, red morocco backstrip label lettered & ruled in gilt, edges gilt-rolled. [vi], 498, [14("An Alphabetical Table of those things which are most remarkable in this History")] pp. Copper-engraved allegorical frontispiece. Some age-discoloration of leaves; but a sound copy in an elegant period-style modern binding. Second Edition of this translation, which was first published in 1654; later editions followed in 1671, 1682, & 1688. Gnaeus Pompeius Trogus was a Roman historian active about 20 BC. His major work was a vast universal history in 44 books entitled Historiae Philippicae, of which there survives only the table of contents and the Epitome, a selection of favorite passages made by Marcus Junianus Justinus, a third-century Roman historian about whom nothing is known. The translator, Richard Codrington (1601-1665), was an industrious author who produced numerous translations fo French and Latin writings. [Wing J1272.]
