Barante was a French statesman and historian. This work procured him immediate admission to the Academie Francais. Illustrated throughout, with 12 plates to vol I, 10 to vol II, nine to volume III, 12 to vol IV, 11 to vol V, 10 to vol VI, 10 to vol VII, 11 to volume VIII, 10 to volume IX, 11 to volume X, 9 to volume XI, 11 to volume XII. Collation unavailable. Vols I-III are the Sixieme edition with volumes IV-VII, being thenouvelle edition. VolumeVIII, IX, X, XI and XIIarethe cinquieme edition. With the contentsof all volumes to the rearof volume XII. Thisextensive work won de Barante praise from the Romantic school due to itsnarrative and stylistic qualities. Condition: In half calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with heavy rubbing to the spines and to the joints. Small patches of rubbing to the paper covered boards as well as to the extremities. Small loss to head of spine to volume I. Prior owner's signature to verso of front endpaper dated 1840 and to the recto of front free endpaper, dated 1908 to volume I. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with slight age toning to edges. Light scattered spots throughout. Overall: GOOD..
