A fine copy of the first edition; a second edition was published in 1751. Johan Ihre (1707-1780), one of Sweden's most outstanding philologists and diachronic linguists. After being awarded his Filosofie magister's degree at Uppsala University in 1730, and studying for an additional three years in Germany, France, and England, he returned to his alma mater, where he served as docent (1734), vice head of the university library (1735), professor of Latin poetry (1737) and, from 1738 until his death, Professor Skytteanus. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Letters in 1755. The book offered here is a copy of the now rare first edition of this work. It is an outline of lectures on the Swedish language given by Ihre as part of his duties as Skyttean professor. Other works for which Ihre is remembered are his dialect dictionary (Swenskt dialect lexicon, 1766) and his etymological dictionary of Swedish (Glossarium Suiogothicum, 1769). But what he is perhaps best remembered for is having been the first language scholar to recognize the sound changes that had occurred in the Germanic languages, thus becoming the point of departure for such historical linguists as Rasmus Rask and Jakob Grimm, and for having shown that the Codex argenteus (Silver Bible) manuscript held by the Uppsala University Library is identical with Bishop Wulfila's translation of the Gothic Bible.
