Small octavo, modern three-quarter crimson morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers. $2500.First edition of this scarce survey of Balochistan (today the largest of Pakistan’s five provinces), this copy made unique with the tipped-in insertion of two pages of autograph notes handwritten by the author on the geology of eastern Balochistan. Illustrated with seven mounted Woodbury-type photographic plates and a large folding lithographed map, hand-colored in outline, handsomely bound.Hughes’ valuable work covers the history, geography and ethnography of the region, based on a wide range of official and largely unpublished sources. The fine photographic plates include portraits of Balochi rulers and views of the country. Appendices include a vocabulary of local dialects and detailed descriptions of road routes. The inserted autograph notes, handwritten by Hughes, contain additional detailed information on the geology of eastern Balochistan, in particular the Khithar mountain range, based on information gathered by W.T. Blanford, a member of the Geological Survey of India, during 1876-77. Blanford, who joined the Survey in 1855, was a deputy Superintendent, and worked in a number of locations in India, including Orissa, the Rajmahal Hills, Raneegunge and Malwa and the Central Provinces. See Markham, A Memoir on the Indian Surveys (1871), 302-03. A few closed tears along map folds only. A handsomely bound copy in fine condition. Scarce.
