This book is set during the Italian campaign of World War I. Published in 1929, it is a first-person account of American Frederic Henry, serving as a Lieutenant in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army. The title is taken from a poem by 16th-century English dramatist George Peele. The publication of A Farewell to Arms cemented Hemingway's stature as a modern American writer, became his first best- seller, and has been described as " the premier American war novel from that debacle World War I." This copy was owned by English author Dennis Wheatley whose prolific output of thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. His Gregory Sallust series was one of the main inspirations for Ian Fleming's James Bond stories. Wheatley's bookplate is inside. His library was dispersed by Blackwells in 1979 and this book was in the catalog. The dust jacket was not mentioned or described at that time, but neither were many jackets in catalogs then. This book reappeared for sale in 2011 with this jacket described. It is not known if the jacket was overlooked in the original catalog, or married to the book later.
