Paris: Guingamp. 1837 - Five volumes. 8vo. White marbled boards with green leather spines. 291, 295, 290, 290 & 290pp. Third edition, revised and corrected. Illustrated with 294 full-page black & white engravings. A later edition of this popular work first issued in 1784. The text is by Sylvain Marechal and the engravings are by Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur, a French-Canadian artist, writer and diplomat. This set contains all 294 of the costume plates. They show costumes of people around the world as well as those from Mexico, North America and Canada. Scarce. WorldCat locates only 7 sets of this 1837 edition. In terms of condition the leather spines of this set have some cracking and wear and the upper spine of Vol. 1 lacks a 1-inch piece at the top. There are no loose covers and the bindings are secure. Internally the text in all volumes is in good condition with some scattered foxing throughout, occasionally heavy. Foreign postage extra on this heavy set. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
