Antuerpiae [Antwerp]: Ex Officina Christophori Plantini, M.D.LXXXI, 1581. 16 cm x 10 cm, engraved title-page vignette with illustrated border, 197 continuously numbered half-page woodcuts with illustrated borders, no. 62 is without woodcut emblem, plus 14 unnumbered full-page woodcuts of trees. Includes a brief life of Alciati by Claude Mignault (1536-1606), and an Index. Colophon is dated 1580. Contemporary blind-stamped leather boards. Early rebacking with 4 raised bands, gilt-stamped red leather spine label, corners consolidated and strengthened at time of rebacking, covers lightly scuffed with fine crazing to the original leather covers, 3.5 cm slit at head of upper cover joint, still tight and secure, binder's tape to inner hinges, occasional light contemporary ink markings in the margins, Signatures to front pastedown of John Burns 1858-1943, an English trade unionist and politician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly associated with London politics. A very interesting personality who had a caricature by Spy in Vanity Fair, and was cartooned by Furniss for Punch. In 1919 he was left an annuity of £1000 by Andrew Carnegie which left him financially independent and he spent the rest of his life devoted to his interests in books, London history and cricket; Charles Baker (or Bakers) - handwritten note on Alciati mounted to front free endpaper possibly written by Baker; bookplate of E.C. Simpson, New Zealand book collector and art critic. Mounted to lower whitespace of note is a bookseller's description of the book probably adhered by Simpson as was his style as noted in other books containing his bookplate. To either side of the vignette on the title-page is a tiny contemporary? signature of Ra Hutton (or Huhom), on verso of rear colophon are ink scribbles by same. Text in Latin with some Greek. Overall, a very good copy. . Full Leather. Very Good. Small Octavo.
