Narrative of the Shipwreck of the Antelope in August 1783; with an account of the Pelew Islands to the Present Time [in] Constable's Miscellany Vol. IV. - Adventures of British Seamen
Edinburgh: Constable and Company, 1827. Title page moderately browned.. Small octavo, with an engraved title-page, recent calf binding. This fourth volume of Constable's miscellany concerns the shipwreck of the Antelope in the Palau group (present day Micronesia) and the Mutiny of the Bounty. The first section of some 210 pages is titled "Narrative of the Shipwreck of the Antelope in August 1783; with an account of the Pelew Islands to the Present Time". It is loosely derived from Keate's earlier account of Captain Wilson's adventures in the Pacific and shipwreck on the Palau group, a bestseller of late eighteenth-century voyage literature. From the perspective of social history, books such as Constables Miscellany were important in spreading information about impossibly remote and exotic places to a popular audience in Britain and Europe. It includes separate chapters on Prince Le Boo, his sad death, the internecine wars that engulphed the Palau archipelago, and the like. Of special interest is an ethnological summary of Palau, some 17 pages describing customs, native dress, marriage, ceremonies and the nature of tribal government. This book includes 30 page appendix on cannibalism in the Bay of Islands sub-titled "Particulars of the Destruction of a British Vessel on the Coast of New Zealand", and is accompanied by an engraved portrait of famous Maori chief Tippahee.
