Calmet's influential Bible commentary, in which he sought to give simple, literal meanings of complicated biblical passages. Complete in nine volumes. The third, enlarged edition. Antoine Augustin Calmet (26 February 1672 25 October 1757), a French Benedictine monk, was born at Menil-la-Horgne, in the Meuse department, located in the region of Lorraine. He was educated at the Benedictine priory of Breuil in the town of Commercy, and in 1688 joined the same Order at the Abbey of Saint-Mansuy at Toul, where he was admitted to profession on the 23 October of the following year. After his ordination, 17 March 1696, he was appointed to teach philosophy and theology at the Abbey of Moyenmoutier. Here, with the help of his brethren, he began to gather the material for his commentary of the Bible, which he completed at Munster in Alsace where he was sent in 1704 as sub-prior and professor of Biblical exegesis. With fold-out maps to three volumes depicting places mentioned in the Bible, and beautifully engraved illustrations to the front of each volume, as well as decorated head and tail pieces. Publisher's catalogue to rear of final volume. The set consists of Volume I, Part I; Volume I, Part II and Volumes II to VIII. Condition: In half calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, very worn and rubbed. Leather to all spines is cracked with loss to much leather of corners and head and tail of spines. Boards held by cords only, one board very tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Slight evidence of past worming to many volumes. Institutional ink stamps to endpapers, half titles and title pages, as well as some further pages to each volume. Occasional closed tears to some pages, including some fold-out plates. Overall: GOOD ONLY.
