Sinbad the Sailor & other Stories from the Arabian Nights
London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1914]. Quarto (273 x 204 mm). Recent red full morocco for Asprey, decorative gilt spine, single-line gilt border on sides enclosing decorative gilt panel and motif of a cross-legged figure in multi-coloured morocco onlays, all edges gilt, two-line gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers; with the original cloth covers and spine bound-in. Colour frontispiece and 22 colour plates by Edmund Dulac, tipped in (with captioned tissue guards), plates and letterpress within ornamental borders printed in pale bisque A handsomely bound copy. First Dulac edition. "The exotic stories he illustrated struck a new chord in Dulac. They allowed him to enlarge his skill at caricature, and at the same time to sharpen his miniaturist's technique and to develop his lyrical sense of tone and composition. The sources he turned to were Japanese prints, which he had studied in his youth, with their flat colour and assymetry, and the high detail and colour of Indian and Persian miniatures" (ODNB). These influences are very clear in this sumptuous gift book; one of the other stories collected here being Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.
