A pretty good copy with the 19th century armorial bookplate of Sir William Grace, Baronet.> First edition. Wing L.2249. 1644 saw the beginning of Lilly's long series of pamphlets of prophecy. In the present, his astrological predictions were vague but portentously gloomy. 'Upon a suddaine and unexpected accident, the dissipation and dissolving of some misterious close consultation and mischievous plot against our State and Common-wealth is portended; the disunion and disagreement of the projectors amongst themselves, and all this is forraigne parts as well as in England: a renting in peeces or mutinous disturbance of some monarchy neare hand, or some Austrian family or Principality, &c. A commotion of the meanest sort of people against some principall man, or majistracy: Losse to Spaine; That we English with our Armies shall travers all the in land countries of this Kingdom, &c. This is all I either can or dare say. M.L.' 1644 marked the third phase of the English Civil War, with victories for the Royalists at Copredy Bridge and Lostwithiel and a major defeat at Marston Moor. Lilly's populist predictions and pseudo-scientific prognostications sold like hot-cakes.
