A few pencil markings in margins. Some slight browning. Overall a fine set. Engraved armorial bookplates of J.[osé] C.[aetano] Mazziotti Salema Garção (1886-1961) of Porto, noted collector and wolfram magnate. Blind stamps of same on title-pages. Signature of Fidelino de Figueiredo in upper outer corner of title-pages of volumes VII through X. *** Important collection. First editions of volumes III, V, VI, IX and X; second editions of volumes II, IV, VII and VIII; third edition of volume I. Volumes I, II, IV, VII, VIIII and X consist of @Questões publicas, tomos 1 through 6; volumes III, V and VI contain @Controversias e estudos históricos, tomos 1 through 3; volume IX is devoted to @Literatura. Volumes I through VI bear the imprint Viuva Bertrand & Cª Successores Carvalho & Cª (dated 1880, 1880, 1876, 1882, 1881 and 1884, respectively; on the versos of the title-pages appears: Coimbra?Imprensa da Universidade, except in the case of volume III, which states on the verso of the title: Lisboa?Imprensa Nacional); volumes VII through X have the imprint of Antiga Casa Bertrand?José Bastos & Cª (volumes VII and VIII undated; volume IX withJosé Bastos & Cª?Typographia de Francisco Luiz Gonçalves, dated 1907; volume X dated 1908).Herculano (1810-1877) is recognized as the greatest Portuguese historian of the nineteenth century, and one of the greatest that country ever produced. A complete volume of Innocêncio (XXI, by Brito da Aranha), is devoted to a bibliography and analysis of his works, which include @Historia da origem e estabelecimento da Inquisição em Portugal, Lisbon 1854-59, and @Historia de Portugal, Lisbon 1846-53. Herculano was a novelist as well as a poet and historian, and is responsible for introducing to Portugal the historical romance in the manner of Sir Walter Scott, which influenced Almeida Garrett and later authors.*** Innocêncio XX, 128?30; also XXI, 649?59.
