The Life & Adventures of Peter Wilkins.
London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd.,, 1928. Large square octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, large decorative gilt device on front cover, top edge brown, pictorial pastedown endpapers. With the dust jacket. Colour frontispiece, 16 plates either tinted or coloured (4 double-page), 23 illustrations in the text, by Edward Bawden. Jacket with tears or closed-tears, stains to spine and front panel, spine of binding a little rumpled otherwise a very good copy in the uncommon dust jacket. First edition illustrated by Edward Bawden, signed by him on the title page. Peter Wilkins was first published in November 1750: "the romance itself, telling the story of a castaway in a fantastic land where men and women can fly, owes much to Robinson Crusoe and something to the Arabian Nights' Entertainments and the non-satirical elements of Gulliver's Travels, but is highly inventive on its own terms... [however] Peter Wilkins had to wait over forty years for widespread recognition. It was admired by Coleridge, Southey, Shelley, Leigh Hunt, Charles Lamb, and others of their generation; it provided material for pantomimes and melodramas from 1800 to the 1870s, and was frequently reprinted, entire or abridged, during the nineteenth century" (ODNB). This handsomely produced edition (according to Alan Horne seventeen of the illustrations were sent to France to be handcoloured, see The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators) was Edward Bawden's first major commission as an illustrator.
