The Three Goals.
Boca Raton, Florida:: Hanne Niederhausen,, 2010.. Edition of 4. 8.75 x 5", opens to 8.75 x 10 x 12"; 16 pages. Handpulled etchings (succession of single, diptych, and triptych in centerfold). Printed on Hahnemühle. In lightweight paper slipcase. A short poem "The Three Goals" by David Budbill accompanied by the etchings of Hanne Niederhausen. Hanne Niederhausen: "The number Three is surrounded by superstitions. The phrase 'Third time's the charm' refers to the superstition that after two failures in any endeavor, a third attempt is more likely to succeed. However, in David Budbill's poem the third goal is the hardest to achieve, and it necessitates that the other two goals have been reached. The arrangement of images correspond to the succession of Three: first a single, then a diptych, and a triptych in the centerfold. For the second half of the book the sequence is reversed. The progression of colors in the subtle etchings reflects the numerical principle. The abstractness of the images harmonizes with the requirements of the imaginative poem. The cover papers display rows of threes in an all over pattern ?- yet one row does not conform." Budbill is a poet and playwright. He has had eight books of poetry published. His honors include an Honorary Doctorate from New England College, an NEA fellowship, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in the Vermont mountains. (two copies remaining)
