Sheng shen zhi zhang [complete in nine volumes]
Shanghai: Mei hua shu guan [American Presbyterian Mission Press], 1908. Nine slender volumes bound with thread in Chinese style, text in Chinese, outer brown paper covering on the wraps of the first volume is edgeworn with lost portions around the periphery (not affecting text); the covering remains intact on the other volumes. Interior pages are toned but otherwise very good. Pages remain supple. Average length per volume is about a dozen double-sided leaves; illustrations scattered throughout include several in color. Introductory prefaces by Wu Fengyi, Jia Naizhen, and Cao Zhenxia explain the significance of the work and its necessity in the Chinese context. There were several editions of this work; no holdings of this 1908 edition found in OCLC as of November 2015. A physiology textbook for schools, introducing western medicine and broader concepts in biology. Porter, trained in medicine and theology at Yale, spent a quarter century in China until fleeing at the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.
