London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1829. First edition.. Hardcover. Fine. 4to. Two volumes in one. Each volume has its own typeset title page,, and the engraved title for both is present at the beginning. Sixty-four full page, tissue guarded plates are present (complete). Finely bound in full crimson morocco. Spine in six compartments with raised bands, gilt titles, marbled endpapers. The plates are in fine condition and free from foxing. One plate has light foxing on the revere, not affecting the image, and the engraved title has light foxing. Each plate has tissue guards. One guard had a closed tear repaired at an early date with translucent glassine. Essentially a clean copy in a fine binding. Hugh William Williams, known as Grecian Williams, was a landscape painter, probably born in Devon but who spent most of his career in Scotland. In June 1816 Williams embarked on an extensive journey through Italy and Greece in the company of his friend and patron William Douglas. This journey provided Williams with the material for this title, his 'Travels in Italy' (1820), as well as numerous watercolors.
