V. Gestel - Van het Schip, Maps in books of Russia and Poland 60 (p. 542, under Commelin); Tiele, Bibl. 1132; Tiele, Mém. p. 114; Howego, to 1800, B21. Van der Veer's excellent account of the earliest Dutch exploration voyages in search of a Northeast Passage. Although the purpose of the voyages was not successful, the ships stranding in the ice at Nova Zembla, the voyages brought a wealth of new information to the world, and the account became rightfully world famous. Besides, the feat of spending eight months on the exceedingly cold and bare ice at Nova Zembla, fighting ferocious bears and facing other perils, naturally touched the imagination of all, and still does today. Some minor spotting at places. Very good copy.
