The Hand-Book to Arizona, Its Resources, History, Towns, Mines, Ruins, and Scenery [with] Map of Arizona Prepared Specially for R. J. Hinton's Hand Book of Arizona Compiled from Official Maps of Military Division of the Pacific Surveyor General's Office
San Francisco: Payot, Upham & Company, 1878. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. pp. 429, ci (Appendix), 43 (ads), in original flexible red pebbled cloth, rebacked with original spine laid down. 4 maps (2 folding) + plates, illustrations in the text. Bookplate of Miss Nannie Clayton (or Baltimore, MD) on front pastedown, and her signature, dated 1888, on the front flyleaf. An important early Arizona promotional work, accompanied by the large lithograph map (24.5" x 34.5"), which was created for the book but issued separately and is now rarely found with it. The map is linen-backed, but has splits at several folds and some substantive losses. It is currently stored flat, shrinkwrapped on acid-free backing board for stability. This was one of the most detailed maps of the Arizona territory of the time, providing up-to-date information about the location of mines and mining roads, mills, furnaces, telegraph lines, indian reservations and pueblos, settlements, forts, and major landmarks. The proposed routes of the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Texas and Pacific Railroad are shown, and an inset details the existing railroad route from Yuma to Sacramento and San Francisco. Howes H-513; Streeter Sale 525 (map).
