Rome: Bernabò, 1725. |~||~||~||~||~||~| Girolamo Franzini's Le cose maravigliose dell'alma città di Roma (1600) is considered an iconic work on travel writing, as well as one of the first sophisticated modern guide books to the city of Rome. Franzini's woodcut blocks were extremely popular and used for the illustration of many guides to Rome for more than a hundred years, as evident in their use here. This pocket-sized guide, "Nouellement corrigée & amplifiée," is a key to understanding the literary, artistic, and architectural nature of the ancient city of Rome. The woodcut illustrations provide just enough detail for the traveler to unmistakably identify the principle structures. This work also contains "Les Antiquites de la Ville de Rome" by Andrea Palladio (pp. 144-200). Some wear and stains to the cover but the text remains clean and bright. An attractive copy. Very rare: OCLC lists no copies outside France. Rossetti G1114.
